Cars.gov – information takeover
First watch this – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAOBlqUqUZ8
This is an interesting thing. It was sent to me on facebook.com by Datajana. It was a week old when I got it so some of you may already know about this. But it is frightening when you first look at it. As they say in this newscast, don’t do this at home.
In once section of this website there is a warning that during use of this application the system is government property. From my experience, this is nothing out of the ordinary for government web-applications. It is standard practice to place this warning banner on any web-based application hosted for government use. While you are using the application all Information systems and data on your computer can affect the function of their application, and possibly ( unknown or know to the user) there may be applications on your system that can attempt to tamper with the government system. The warning also states that they only have this permission while you are connected to the application.
The section of the site which this is found on is not one that should be visited for privet home computers. as an average citizen you should not have any reason to access the mentioned section of the website. The section mentioned is meant to be used by auto dealers to authorizes the Cash for Clunker transaction. Yes it is true that if you continue to access the site you are giving the government permission to access all your files. Just remember that you are given a big bold warning bluntly stating that before you access the web-app. So if your files are used against you by the government, you gave them the files to start with.
If you don’t want the government to have access to you file or computers, don’t hock it up to the internet. One simple fact is that even the government is not immune to hackers and information theft. The only way to have true privacy is to not open the door to the intruder, wither it be a hacker or the government.
All I really have to say about this is two fold. First, don’t go to sites that you don’t need to. Every site you visit is give given some basic access to your system. Second, read the warnings before you click. You never know what you may be agreeing to.
