Bed time stories
[fatherhood_fridays]
With my wife and kids out vacationing for the last two week before school starts back up, I spent some time thinking of things I can do to try and be a fetter father for the girls. Much of their lives I have been in the military and deposed or working nights. I missed the first three years of my first daughter life only seeing her for a month here or there. The first year of my second daughters life I worked nights, once again missing much of both of their growing up. During this past year I have worked in one state while they lived in another state (by my choice, not that I will ever do that again),
Looking at things I can do with the kids, I cam up with a few Ideas. Firs I was looking at cooking. Our oldest does not eat much good food. I was thinking if she had a part in making dinner, it might be easier to get her to eat it. Searching on line for kid friendly cooking ideas I found http://familyfun.go.com/. If you did not know about this site, it has a lot of family and kid interaction ideas. There are a lot more out there, and If you know any good cooking Kids site, let me know.
Besides cooking, I was thinking of getting out more. I had a lot of fun during our summer vacation in 2008. We went our and visited my family that your. They live Oregon, some of the most beautiful wilderness I can see with my own eyes..While at the book store I saw some books on scenic Ohio, and thought it might be fun to go out and see some of this stuff. Being Ohio, we have to opportunity to see these places in all four seasons. The girls have never really seen a snowy winter scene, I think they will love seeing it in person, and destroying it with snow ball fights.
One of my co-workers pointed out that the Ohio RenFest started soon, It has been a few years since I have been to a RenFest and I think the girls will find it interesting, if not a load of fun. We really don’t have the funds to dress up this year, as I have done in the past, but if they want to we can look into doing that next year. RenFests are loads of family fun.
The there is the one thing that I remember from when I grow up. Reading books. My mother would sit and read books aloud to us. We did this most every night. I remember how those books effected my life and made me what I am today. I would like to find some of these old books, like Pilgrims Progress and Angel Walk. I am not that good at reading aloud myself. But I would like to set aside time ever week to read with my family. Reading is one thing That I feel is a great skill that everyone should learn. With reading, and being read to, one learns many new words and how to use them. I think that a strong spoke vocabulary and communication skill are lacking in today’s youth. I think that Of all my ideas, this is the one that we, as a family, will get the best value out of. Bed time stories should be picked up, not thrown away.
Take the time to read to and with your children. Cook with them, and get them out of the house. Do what you can to break free of monotony of daily life. Help them become free thinkers and have fun doing it,

Cooking with your kids is always a great idea. I can’t wait for my little man to get a little older so he can be my sous chef. I definitely think it can help picky eaters possibly develop better eating habits.

Nice – Fresh air is always a winner – especially when it comes to bed time. My eldest sleeps like a charm after a day on the trail!

I am working out of country now so I know how hard that can be. I can’t wait to cook with my son so obviously I think that is an awesome idea.

It sounds like you are all about adjusting your life to accommodate being an active father. That’s a wonderful thing to see.
