The Gift or the Box
[fatherhood_fridays]
Monday was our youngest daughters third birthday. Being that we just moved into a new house, and have yet to get into any social groups here in Columbus, it was not much of a to-do this year. The fact that is falls right after Thanksgiving did not lend to the celebration either. She is still really young and did not seem to care much there was no cake or wrapped gifts, she was just happy to be getting a lot of stuff. She still does not understand the whole birthday thing yet, I don’t really understand it either, but that is a different story.
My parent’s gifts showed up the day after her birthday, not that she cared, it was mot fun stuff. They had sent a large box with a doll house and cloths. What I found was that the box that all this came in was the best part of the gift. Both of the girls spent more time playing in the box than with any of the toys.
I know this is nothing new to any parents of children over two years old. We all know that large boxes will get more attention than the toy that came in them 9 times out of 10. This just reminds me of when I was young and we moved to California. After the move we had tons of large wardrobe boxes. My brother and I got to take these boxes out back and build the biggest box fort ever. This fort brought in our new friends from around the neighborhood. That box fort lasted until the first rain, which was weeks latter. We were sad to see it go, but after that we had made friends to hang out with then.
We are looking at buying a new play set for the girls this Christmas. Now I am wondering if we should just hit up U-Haul and picking up some boxes for them to play with, but then again, boxes don’t last as long as a good playset.
